Why Are AFL Injuries So Common?

Australian Rules football combines explosive acceleration, high-speed running, jumping, rapid changes of direction and physical contact. These demands place significant stress on the muscles, tendons, ligaments and joints.

Let's look at some of the most common injuries AFL players experience.

Shoulder Injuries

Shoulder injuries are particularly common in AFL because of tackling, collisions, contested marks and falls onto the shoulder or outstretched arm.

Common shoulder injuries include:

Shoulder dislocations and instability

A shoulder dislocation occurs when the ball of the shoulder joint comes out of its socket. Even after the shoulder has been put back into place, the surrounding ligaments and other structures may remain damaged.

Research has identified shoulder instability as a significant source of missed games in professional Australian football, with recurrence being an important concern.

AC joint injuries

The acromioclavicular, or AC, joint is located at the top of the shoulder. It is commonly injured when a player lands directly onto the point of their shoulder.

The severity of an AC joint injury can vary considerably, so an accurate assessment is important to determine the best management approach and expected recovery time.

Knee Injuries

The knee is exposed to considerable forces during football. Running, pivoting, landing, tackling and sudden changes of direction can all place stress on the knee joint.

Common AFL knee injuries include:

  • Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries.

  • Medial collateral ligament (MCL) injuries.

  • Meniscus injuries.

  • Patellar dislocations and instability.

Some knee injuries are relatively minor, while others can result in months away from football.

The importance of early assessment

Knee pain, swelling, locking, instability or a feeling that the knee is giving way should not be ignored.

An accurate assessment can help determine whether the injury is likely to involve a ligament, meniscus, tendon or another structure. Where appropriate, a physiotherapist may also recommend further medical assessment or imaging.

Hamstring Injuries

Hamstring strains are among the most common injuries in Australian Rules football.

The hamstrings work hard during sprinting, acceleration, deceleration and kicking. The high-speed running demands of AFL make hamstring injuries a major concern for players at all levels.

Common symptoms of a hamstring strain

Players may experience:

  • Sudden pain in the back of the thigh.

  • A sharp sensation during sprinting.

  • Pain when accelerating or kicking.

  • Tightness or discomfort after training.

  • Reduced running speed.

  • Bruising or swelling in more significant injuries.

Groin Injuries

Groin pain is another common issue in footballers.

Groin pain can involve several different structures, including:

  • The adductor muscles.

  • The hip joint.

  • The abdominal and pelvic region.

  • The pubic region.

  • Other surrounding muscles and tendons.

Because there are several possible causes, it is important to obtain an accurate diagnosis rather than simply treating all groin pain as a muscle strain.

Common symptoms

Footballers may experience:

  • Pain when kicking.

  • Discomfort during sprinting.

  • Pain with changes of direction.

  • Discomfort when getting up from the ground.

  • Symptoms that worsen as training loads increase.

Other Common AFL Injuries

While shoulder, knee, hamstring and groin injuries are important concerns, footballers can experience a wide range of other injuries.

Ankle injuries

Ankle sprains are common in football and can affect running, jumping, balance and changes of direction.

Calf strains

Calf injuries can occur during sprinting, acceleration or sudden changes of pace.

Quadriceps strains/tears

The quadriceps are heavily involved in sprinting, kicking and jumping. Strains can limit a player's ability to run and kick effectively.

Concussion

Concussion requires careful assessment and appropriate management. Players should not return to contact sport until they have completed the appropriate medical assessment and return-to-play process.

Overuse injuries

Repeated training and match demands can contribute to conditions such as tendon pain, stress injuries and persistent muscle or joint symptoms.

The earlier an injury is assessed, the sooner you can understand what is wrong and what needs to be done to get you back to football.
