ACL injuries - From injury to return to sport.

One Moment. One Twist. One Pop.

That’s all it takes for an ACL injury to change everything.

Whether it happens during a tackle, a sudden change of direction, or a jump gone wrong — ACL tears are one of the most feared injuries in sport. And for good reason: they’re painful, disruptive, and come with a long rehab road ahead.

But here’s the thing no one tells you:

Your recovery depends largely on the quality of your physiotherapy and rehabilitation and not just the surgery or surgeon.

At Elite Physio, we support athletes and active individuals across Darwin through every phase of their ACL recovery. Whether you play AFL football, soccer, netball, rugby or any other sport, we’ll guide you through your rehab from day one and help you get you back in the game stronger and better than before.

What Is the ACL — and How Do Injuries Happen?

The Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) is one of the key stabilisers of your knee. It prevents excessive forward movement and twisting of the tibia (shin bone) relative to the femur (thigh bone).

An ACL tear often happens during:

  • Sudden changes in direction (cutting, pivoting)

  • Landing awkwardly from a jump

  • Rapid deceleration

  • Direct impact (contact sports)

You’ll often hear (or feel) a “pop”, followed by swelling, instability, and difficulty weight-bearing. Not all ACL injuries need surgery - but most athletes and high-movement individuals will benefit from it, especially if returning to contact and change of direction sports.

Why Physio Is the Game-Changer in ACL Recovery

Surgery is just one piece of the puzzle. The real work, and results come from a structured, progressive physiotherapy and rehabilitation program.

At Elite Physio, our physios work with ACL-specific rehab protocols, high-level testing (Vald performance system), and sport specific movement retraining to ensure you return stronger and better than before.

The Elite approach:

  • Hands-on treatment to help you regain full range of movement and re-engage lower limb muscles.

  • Targeted strength training (quads, hamstrings, glutes, calves)

  • Neuromuscular retraining to restore stability, proprioception and confidence

  • Sport-specific training/conditioning and return-to-play criteria

  • Clear, phase-based programming and progressions - no guesswork

If you’re searching for ACL rehab experts in Darwin or need post-op knee rehabilitation we’re the specialists, with skilled Sports Physios and state and national sports coverage experience.

ACL Recovery Timeline - What to Expect

ACL rehab takes time. Rushing it or trying to stick to “common” timeframes are two of the most common mistakes we see - and are also the leading cause of delayed return to sport and re-injury.

Here’s a guide:

Note: timelines vary by individual. Your healing, sport demands, pre-op status as well as other injuries (meniscus, MCL) all affect recovery.

Don’t Rush It.

Returning to sport too early is one of the most preventable causes of ACL re-rupture. Research shows that athletes who return to pivoting sport before nine months post-surgery are up to four times more likely to sustain a graft re-rupture than those who wait.

Time alone, however, is not the answer. Athletes need to meet objective criteria and be gradually exposed to their environment to return safely.
